Prioritities 2010

 
Primary prevention
- Continuity in smoking prevention activities (special emphasis on young people and women).
- Reduction of obesity and overweight (special emphasis on children).
- Promotion of moderate physical exercise on a regular basis.
- Prevention of excessive sun exposure.
- Strict compliance with legislation regarding exposure to carcinogenic agents in the work place.
- Administration of the human papilloma virus vaccine in 12-year old girls.
- Prevention of excessive alcohol consumption.

Early detection
- To gradually extend colorectal cancer screening to all the population between the ages of 50 and 69 years (expected full coverage in 2014).
- To assess the breast cancer screening programme and to introduce quality improvement measures.
- To apply the early detection protocol for cervical cancer by performing Pap-smears and detection of the human papilloma virus in women included in the target group in primary care.
- To assess all the evaluations in the framework of the Screening expert group and to discuss the recommendations for improvement and elaboration of reports on changes in available scientific evidence.

Cancer care
- To extend the fast diagnostic of cancer programme to prostate and bladder tumors.
- To invest in radiation therapy equipment until obtaining 35 technologically updated linacs in the public hospitals by 2012 (implementation of 6 new equipments and 6 updated).
- To continue the development of oncoguides for the main tumour sites
- To apply the criteria of the commission for complex cancer surgery procedures and therapies (including pediatric oncology) approved by the Catalan Health Service..
- To extend the multidisciplinary care model considering the caseload of patients in every hospital.
- To develop a clinical nursing model with case management responsibilities in the scope of the fast diagnostic of cancer programme, the tumors committee and multidisciplinary functional unit, in accordance with healthcare professionals and those in charge of healthcare centers. Also, develop the professional profile for the coordinator of the multidisciplinary functional unit.
- To extend psychooncological care to hospitals with a patient volume larger than 450 patients annually and consolidate the provision of healthcare services in reference centers. Define the intervention model of psychooncological care integrated into psychiatry and clinical psychology services..
- To improve information systems in order to be able to assess the clinical results of healthcare centers and the healthcare system in oncology.
- To carry out a pilot assessment of long term survivors of cancer, exploring their specific needs and use of complementary and/or alternative therapies.
- To elaborate shared criteria for lymphedema treatment in breast cancer.
- To assess the cost of cancer treatment linked with the oncoguides and the additional cost of therapeutic innovations in clinical practice.

Information systems
- To set up the Cancer Registry of Catalonia so that it will be operative by 2010 with the integration of different existing databases and the incorporation of relevant clinical data.
- To create the chemotherapy information system in order to assess its use and the relationship with indications presented in the oncoguides.
- To improve the radiation therapy information system by updating variables and establishing a shared computer-based circuit for all hospitals.
- To create the Cancer.Cat web site, with evidence-based information aimed at citizens regarding cancer, its risk factors, prevention and early detection, treatments and disease management carried out by patients and their social setting.
