In 1995, the Department of Health and Social Security of the Catalan regional government, created the “Centre d’Estudis Epidemiològics sobre la SIDA de Catalunya” (Centre for Epidemiological Studies of AIDS in Catalonia), CEESCAT.  Operating under the Directorate General for Drug Dependency and AIDS, CEESCAT is responsible for epidemiological surveillance of AIDS/HIV; designing, implementing and analysing infromation systems with which to monitor the disease in Catalonia .  These information systems are known as “Sistema Integrat de Vigilància Epidemiològica sobre el VIH/SIDA de Catalunya” (Integrated HIV/AIDS Surveillance System of Catalonia), SIVES.

Coinciding with the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona and with the objective of providing an analysis of the Global characteristics and evolution of the HIV virus and AIDS in Catalonia , the SIVES Report for 2001 has been published. This Report brings the customary information systems up to date and includes some results from research projects which are being undertaken at the centre.
