WHAT IS sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)?

Also known as cot death, SIDS is the sudden unexpected death of a baby aged under 1 year, while sleeping. In Spain , SIDS is one of the leading causes of death in infants under 1 year of age.

ADVICES FOR THE PREVENTION of sudden infant death syndrome

AVOID PRONE SLEEPING
Sleeping on one’s front increases the risk of sudden infant death. If the baby suffers from gastroesophageal reflux, ask your paediatrician.

AVOID SOFT SLEEPING SURFACES
Pillows, duvets and soft toys should be avoided in the cot.

AVOID OVER HEATING OR OVER WRAPPING
Overheating can increase the risk of cot death.

PROVIDE A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR THE BABY
Do not smoke and do not allow people to smoke in the same room as your baby.

IF POSSIBLE, BREASTFEED THE BABY

Breastfeeding reduces the risk of sudden infant death.

During pregnancy, remember tobacco, alcohol, and drugs consumption increase the risk of SIDS. For further information, ask your paediatrician.
